Xylitol Gum & Breath Mints Dosage for Optimum Dental Benefit. HOW MUCH? Adult: 3 to 10 pcs. of Gum per day are very effective. More than 16 begin to yield diminishing dental benefits. HOW OFTEN? CONSISTENCY IS IMPORTANT, USE DAILY. If used only occasionally or even as often as once a day, xylitol may NOT be effective, regardless of the amount. FREQUENCY IS THE KEY, Use xylitol at least three, and preferably 5 times every day. TIMING? Use immediately after meals or snacks and if possible clearing the mouth by swishing water. Warning: Do not feed Xylitol or give your Dog access to Xylitol and Xylitol Products. While Xylitol has gone through many years of testing to make sure it is not only
safe, but very good for humans, dogs are a different matter. When some dogs
eat xylitol, they have an immediate drop in blood sugar. This can result in
seizures, depression, loss of coordination, liver damage, and even death.
While it is not known if this is true with cats other pets, it would be better
safe than sorry until more information is known. Dr. Jeanette Lubeanau, owner of Above and Beyond Pet Care Hospital in Lubbock says just one piece of sugar free gum could be toxic to a 20 pound dog. There are many other things, not commonly known, that can harm your dog. Check with your local ASPCA for a good booklet titled: 101 Things You Didn't Know Could Harm Your Pet. Attention Diabetics Xylitol, and Polyols in general, have been loosely accepted by the AMA as "OK" for people with diabetes, mainly because the slow absorption and lower absorbtion keeps blood sugar spikes far lower than sucrose would. In other words, the glycemic response is lower. Again, that doesn't always mean it is ideal, or you can go “hog wild” Although it is not absorbed completely, or as rapidly as simple sugars, when a large amount of Xylitol is ingested (over 60 grams) a portion of the carbohydrate calories can be absorbed, those calories DO count, and a blood sugar spike is quite possible.
